Since 1910 Wernigerode has officially called itself the colourful town in the Harz. Much of the old town is made up of half-timbered houses, and on the market square stands the town hall with its two pointed oriel towers, built between 1494 and 1498. Above the town rises the castle, which got its present form in the late 19th century. From Forckestraße, Grüne Straße and Albert-Bartels-Straße you are in the centre within a few minutes, and at Mühlental the forest starts right behind the house.

The steam trains of the Harz narrow-gauge railways start at the main station and run via Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke up to the 1,141-metre Brocken. On foot you can follow the rocky Steinerne Renne gorge, and the Christianental wildlife park lies right next to the Mühlental valley. With the guest card, buses in town and across most of the Harz are free.
