Wernigerode is a medium-sized town and a state-approved resort in the district of Harz (Saxony-Anhalt). According to Hermann Löns, Wernigerode is also referred to as the colorful town on the Harz Mountains, as in the official town motto.

The magnificent castle of Wernigerode sits enthroned on a hill in the southeast of the city. The former hilltop castle was built in the medieval 12th century and has since been rebuilt and expanded several times.
Today the castle is known as a historical sight in Wernigerode and is open to visitors. For an entrance fee of €7.00 you can enter the interior of the castle, where magnificently furnished rooms await you on a tour and then a castle museum. You also have a good view of the city of Wernigerode and its attractions from the spacious castle garden.
The popular town of Wernigerode with its historic town center and elaborately restored and colorful half-timbered houses is located on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains.
